BNP Paribas Open 2012 Increases Prize Money

The ATP World Tour and the WTA combined tennis tournament in Indian Wells, which is known as the BNP Paribas Open,
has upped its prize money. Each of the singles champions in the men and women's tournament will be rewarded $1
million in prize money. The 2012 Tournament has a commitment of $11 Million which will be spread out to $1 Million
each for the men's single winner and women's single winner, $500,000 for the singles finalists, $200,000 for the
semi-finalists, and $100,000 for the quarterfinalists, plus the prize money has been increased for all rounds of the
tournament. The BNP Paribas Open has nearly doubled the total prize money offered to players in less than five year.

Serena Williams Withdraws from Brisbane International

Serena Williams withdrew from the Brisbane International Tennis Tournament after injuring her ankle
playing against Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia. Williams was serving the match with a 6-2, 5-3 lead when
she twisted her left ankle and fell to the court. She continued on to win 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the Brisbane
quarterfinals. The injury puts a question as to if she will play
at the 2012 Australian Open which starts Aug. 16 through Aug. 29.
Serena says "I'm going to take a couple of days off, not too many, and see how I feel. I'm still hopeful of
playing the Australian Open?."
Serena Williams is a five time winner of the Australian Open.

A new sort of tennis tour, which will feature a one-month, 12-city (including Los Angeles) event and include American legends Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, John McEnroe and current Davis Cup captain Jim Courier, will begin next fall.

The official announcement of this new Champions Series tennis event will be made at 11 a.m. May 3 at Staples Center's Star Plaza. After the announcement, Sampras, Agassi and Courier will play a tennis exhibition.

In addition to Agassi, Sampras, Courier and McEnroe, the U.S. tour will feature Michael Chang, Mats Wilander and Bjorn Borg competing for a prize pool totaling $1 million. Each of the one-night tournaments will feature four champions paired in one-set semifinals, culminating with the winners competing for the title in an eight-game, pro-set championship match.

Last February, Sampras, Agassi, McEnroe and Ivan Lendl sold out Madison Square Garden in New York with McEnroe trying to play Lendl (McEnroe sprained an ankle and had to retire early in the match) and Sampras beating Agassi, 6-3, 7-5, in a match that featured competitive, high-quality tennis.

CHARLESTON, South Carolina — World number one Caroline Wozniacki captured her third title of 2011 Sunday, launching her clay court season with a victory over Elena Vesnina in the Family Circle Cup final.
The top-seeded Dane defeated Vesnina 6-2, 6-3 to add the title to those she won at Dubai and Indian Wells, California, and admitted the triumph on Charleston's green clay had her looking ahead to the red clay of Roland Garros.
"I feel confident and I know I can win a Slam," said Wozniacki, who has climbed to number one without triumphing in one of tennis' four major championships.
"It's all about getting everything together," added Wozniacki, whose best Grand Slam finish was runner-up at the 2009 US Open.
She had a match point against Li Na but eventually fell to the Chinese player in the semi-finals of this year's Australian Open.
"The draw has to fit, I have to play well for two weeks, things like that all have to work together," Wozniacki said.
She showed her toughness this week. She dropped just one set in five matches, to Yanina Wickmayer in the quarter-finals, and defeated former number one Jelena Jankovic in straight sets to reach the final here for the second time.
Wozniacki saved all four break points she faced against 56th-ranked Vesnina, including two in the seventh game of the second set to douse the Russian's best chance to mount a challenge.
"I mean sometimes you feel like she's everywhere on the court," Vesnina said.
Vesnina Russian managed to hold on under pressure through much of the second frame, fending off five break points before Wozniacki finally broke for a 5-3 lead.
Wozniacki then served out the match, taking the title on her first match point.
Vesnina had toppled four seeded opponents to reach the championship match. But she sounded like all of Wozniacki's opponents this week as she marveled at the way the Dane finds ways to win.
"It's not like she was like Serena, you know, powerful play," Vesnina said. "Caroline, she's using pace. She's using the whole court and she's playing smart tennis."
Wozniacki fell to Sabine Lisicki in the 2009 Charleston final, then made a disappointing injury exit last year after hurting her ankle in the semi-finals.
"This has always been a great tournament for me," she said.

Serena Williams is Threated with a Blood Clot

After a routine foot surgery that Serena Williams had in New York, Serena got on a plane to fly back to Los Angeles where she lives. Unfortunately, the tennis star developed a dangerous blood clot in her lungs which is called a pulmonary embolism. The blood clot could have possibly killed her.

Hopefully this will not be the end of Serena's tennis career.

The BNP Paribas Open, also referred to as the Indian Wells Open,

is one of the best tennis tournaments in the world. It is held
annually at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, at Indian Wells, Ca.

The event will take place from March 9 through Mar. 20.

This 36 year old tournament is now touted as the fifth major.

Partners Charlie Pasarell and Raymond Moore envisioned, then built this super tennis complex on 54 acres opening in 2000.

It includes the second-largest tennis stadium court (16,100 capacity) in the world, the highest attended (339,657 fans - 2010) venue outside of the top four majors, with a relaxed atmosphere in which the players love to compete.

This dual-gender event with prize money of $9 million, will this year offer Hawkeye (instant replay) on all eight match-courts and better viewing for spectators on the 16 practice courts, making it easier to get close to the action.

Steve Simon, tournament director had this to say about the Hawkeye improvements, "Our event will be the most accurately officiated tournament in the history of tennis."

A separate men's and women's draw of 96 players each in singles, and another of 32 doubles teams each represent the premier athletes in what the game of tennis has to offer on a professional level.

This does not include an additional 96 players involved in the men's and women's qualifying tournament vying for 12 spots in each of the main singles draws two days prior to the main tournament commencing-where no admission is charged to view.

The women's qualifying is March 7 and 8, while the men's is March 8 and 9.

Last year this ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Event had Ivan Ljubicic defeat Andy Roddick in a tight 7-6, 7-6 finals, while Jelena Jankovic took down Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-4 to win the Sonic Ericcson WTA Tour Premier title.

This year's list of players is a who's who of the current tennis world.

There's Rafael Nadal, Caroline Wozniacki, Roger Federer, Vera Zvonareva, Novak Djokovic, Kim Clijsters, the Bryan Brothers, Andy Roddick, Andy Murray, Na Li, Francesca Schiavone, Jelena Jankovic, Juan Martin Del Potro, Samantha Stosur...if they're ranked in the top 84 or so in the world and healthy, most likely they'll be in attendance.

Potito Starace and Viktor Troicki each defeated Russian players in three sets Monday, the first day of the Kremlin Cup tennis tournament in Moscow.

Starace rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Moscow's Teymuraz Gabashvili. Starace landed 86 percent of his first serve and lost his serve once -- a break that cost him the first set. He lost only seven points over 10 service games in the second and third sets.

Troicki got by Dmitry Tursunov, a native of Moscow, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Troicki finished with five breaks, including two in the final set.

The day's other match was also a three-setter with seventh-seeded Sergiy Stakhovsky beating Michael Russell 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Russell won one more point (102-101) in the match but Stakhovsky had one more break of serve to advance.

Russians Nikolay Davydenko and defending champion Mikhail Youzhny are the top seeds for the tournament, which will pay out $1 million in prizes, including $181,750 first-place check.

Serena Williams will not play in Rogers Cup due to foot injury

Unfortunately, Serena Williams has withdrawn from next month's Rogers Cup tennis tournament in Montreal with a foot injury.

The top-ranked American is scheduled to undergo surgery after getting cut by broken glass at a restaurant last week. She'll miss all of the hardcourt events leading up to the U.S. Open, including the Aug. 13-22 tournament in Montreal.

"I'm so upset that I won't be able to play in the upcoming events because of this foot surgery," Williams said in a statement.

The Rogers Cup expects to have 42 of the world's top 45 players in the draw.

Williams has been featured in promotional material for the tournament. She lost in the semifinals of last year's Rogers Cup in Toronto. The 28-year-old hasn't played in Montreal since 2000.

Querrey's loss extended the number one seed's run of never winning the title in the 34 years of the tournament.

Melbourne, Australia - Frenchman Gilles Simon has withdrawn from the 2010 Australian Open today with an injury to his right knee. Simon hurt his knee at last year's French Open, where he lost in the third round to Romanian Victor Hanescu.

The world No. 15 was a quarter-finalist at the 2009 Australian Open. He was scheduled to play Frederico Gil of Portugal in his first round match. The 25-year old Simon was in the same quarter of the draw as world No. 1 Roger Federer, sixth seed Nicolay Davydenko, last year's Australian Open semi-finalist Fernando Verdasco, and the 22nd seed Lleyton Hewitt.

In the last two years, Gilles Simon finished inside the top 15 rankings, and has a career-high ranking of 6 in January last year. Simon was hoping to overcome his knee injury at the beginning of this year and is upset with the setback. The date of his return is currently unknown.

The 26th edition of the Sony Ericsson Open is scheduled for March 22-April 4 and will once again feature the top 96 players on both ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tours competing at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Miami for one of the most prestigious titles in tennis.

Men's and women's qualifying will start on Monday, March 22 with a select number of women's opening round main draw matches taking place on Tuesday, March 23. Men's main draw action kicks-off on Wednesday, March 24.

Additionally, the Tuesday women's main draw start means that women's seeded players will begin play on Thursday, March 25 rather than the traditional Friday start.

But the Sony Ericsson Open is more than just tennis, it is a total entertainment experience. High fashion, fine food, fabulous shopping and celebrity musical performances have made the tournament the most glamorous on tour.

Safina out of Brisbane International

Dinara Safina announced today her withdrawl from the Brisbane international due to a back injury. The tournament will begin on January 3rd and last until the 10th.

“Despite this loss we still have a very strong Brisbane International women’s draw in 2010," Brisbane International Tournament Director Steve Ayles said. "With Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Dokic we have some real star power and depth, creating a great mix for spectators and a huge buzz around Brisbane."

Safina has yet to elaborate on her current injury and lenth of time she is expected to be out.

Brisbane’s 2010 line-up announced

Four Grand Slam winners, five former No.1s, an additional 10 former top 10 players and crowd favorites headline an exciting field for the Brisbane International this January.

With the full player list announced today, Grand Slam Champions, Andy Roddick (US Open 2003), Kim Clijsters (US Open 2009 and 2005), Ana Ivanovic (French Open 2008) and Justine Henin (Australian Open 2004, French Open 2007, 2006, 2005 and 2003 and US Open 2007 and 2003 will be the major attractions.

In the men’s draw, 2009 Wimbledon finalist and world No.6 Roddick is joined by the reigning champion Radek Stepanek, fellow Czech Tomas Berdych, Frenchmen Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet, and crowd favourites James Blake and Marcos Baghdatis.

Clijsters, Henin and Ivanovic are joined by world No.2 Dinara Safina, fellow Russian Nadia Petrova, glamour girl Daniela Hantuchova and former Gold Coast Champion Lucie Safarova.

Australia will be represented by Jelena Dokic in the women’s draw and Peter Luczak in the men’s draw with Taylor Dent, son of former ATP player and 1974 Australian Open finalist Phil Dent, adding another Australian angle.

Brisbane International Tournament Director Steve Ayles said he is excited about the strength of the player field in 2010.

“Both the men’s and women’s draws have some real star power, depth and flamboyant players creating a great mix for spectators,” Ayles said.

“We have had a lot of success in attracting new players in 2010 but have also benefited from a large number of players wanting to return to compete in their second Brisbane International.

“Fifteen out of 25 men and 14 out of 24 women are returning players, which is the ultimate endorsement for the tournament, the event and the city.

“It is going to be very exciting to see who’s going to start their 2010 season in the best possible way – in good form and with a title win in Brisbane.”

The men’s draw is again dominated by the French with Monfils, Gasquet, Jeremy Chardy, Arnaud Clement, Marc Gicquel, Michael Llodra, Paul-Henri Mathieu and Florent Serra named in the main draw.

Amalie Mauresmo Retires From Tennis

France - 30-year-old Amalie Mauresmo announced today her retirement from professional tennis, saying she no longer had a desire to train. Mauresmo finished this season at No. 21.

Mauresmo was ranked No. 1 in 2004, and in 2006, she won both of her Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. She also had seven wins over Top 10 players this last year, but did not compete in the last two tournaments of the year. Her last match was in the second round of the 2009 U.S. Open, when she was defeated by Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada 6-4 6-0.

Asked about a possible comeback, Mauresmo said her decision was definitive. "Even if I've learned to never say never," the Frenchwoman said. "The players you are thinking about stopped earlier than me before coming back."

Federer Crowned 5th Time ATP World Tour Champion

Roger Federer was crowned ATP World Tour Champion for the fifth time today after his victory over British star Andy Murray. Federer defeated Murray 3-6 6-3 6-1 on Tuesday night, inching closer to a place in the semi-finals of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 in London.

"These best of three set matches are tough, especially when the best players play each other," said Federer. "Whoever has the momentum, he can swing freely. The other guy has to be careful. That's why the beginning of sets are crucial. Of course, I had my doubts I was going to come through after having lost so many times in three sets against him. It feels good, but more than that, I think this is more the night to celebrate No. 1 than celebrate the victory over Andy really."

Federer now joins tennis legends Pete Sampras and Jimmy Conners as the only players with five or more year-end No. 1 finishes in the history of the South African Airways ATP Rankings (since 1973). Federer has won 15 Grand Slams, and was ATP World Tour Champion from 2004-2007 (he lost the title last year to Rafael Nadal).

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will have the match of the year at the 2009 ATP World Tour Finals starting Sunday, November 22. Federer ruled as ATP World Tour Champion for four years between 2004-2007 before Nadal snapped the streak last year.

As the No. 1 and No. 2 players in the world, Federer and Nadal will not meet in the round-robin schedule, as they will be the highest seeds in their respective groups (which will be drawn Wednesday). But if they meet in the semi-finals, then that match could go a long way to determining who will be crowned 2009 ATP World Tour Champion.

Here are the key scenarios in the battle for the 2009 ATP World Tour Champion title:

1. If Nadal is an undefeated champion at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals (winning all-three round-robin matches, a semi-final and final) he will earn the maximum 1,500 points. If that happens, Federer would need to either win all three round-robin matches OR reach the final to beat out Nadal for the 2009 ATP World Tour Champion title.

2. If Nadal goes 2-1 in round-robin play and wins the title he will earn 1,300 points. If that happens, Federer would need to either win two round-robin matches OR win one round-robin match and reach the final to beat out Nadal for the 2009 ATP World Tour Champion title.

November 6, 2009 - World No. 18 Yanina Wickmayer voluntarily withdrew from the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions in Bali yesterday because of her recent 12-month suspension from the WTA, effective immediately. Wickmayer was suspended by the Flemish Doping Tribunal (VDT) for failing three occasions to fulfill the ADAMS (Anti-Doping Administration and Management System), also known as the "whereabouts rule." This rule states that players have to tell national anti-doping authorities where they will be at a chosen hour each day for a three-month period. An appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport is allowed.

Fellow Belgian Xavier Malisse was also baned for 12-months for missing a doping test.

Vera Dushevina of Russia will take Wickmayer's place in the current tournament. Dushevina will meet Maria Anabel Medina Garrigues from Spain in round-robin play tonight (Friday). Although their match will still go on, Dushevina is ineligible to reach the semifinals - having played only one match - and due to Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm's win over Medina Garrigues on Thursday.

Andre Agassi Confesses to Illegal Drug Use

October 28, 2009 - Former number 1 Andre Agassi confessed in his latest autobiography 'Open' that he used crystal meth during his playing career, and lied to tennis authorities about taking drugs to escape punishment. He says it happened at the height of his tennis success.

The eight-times grand slam winner Agassi says he used the drug in 1997 when he struggled with professional and personal issues. He also revealed that he failed a drug test the same year but convinced the ATP to drop the punishment after writing a letter to argue that his use of the drug was accidental.

In 1997, Agassi pulled out of the French Open and slumped down to No. 144 in the world rankings. He resurrected his career in 1998, making the biggest one-year leap in history into the top 10 before going on to win the French Open the next season. He finished at number one in 1999 after taking the US Open.

Agassi, one of only six men to have won all four Grand Slam events - Wimbledon, the French Open, US Open and Australian Open - is currently married to former number one women's tennis player Steffi Graf.

Safina loses in China Open; Could mean top spot

World Number 1 Dinara Safina was booted out of the China Open today after wild card Shuai Zhang beat her in the second round, 7-5 7-6(5).

"I'm just having some bad losses right now. So many matches that are very close, ones that I should win, having set points or match points every time," Safina said in a post-match statement. "It's very disappointing. I would like to take [a] break now, and I'm very upset with myself."

Safina, only 23, has had a controvercial stint at No. 1 since April 2009 and could lose her ranking after this defeat. Safina has never won a grand slam title. Serena Williams is set to take over the top position if she wins her second round match against Ekaterina Makarova tomorrow.

Andy Murray withdraws from Japan Open

With this win, Sharapova is set to play 11th seed Agnieska Radwanska, who defeated Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia 6-3 6-1.

Sharapova demonstrated more comfort and ease on the court today. She has been struggling quite a bit since returning from a 10-month injury layoff from shoulder surgery last October.

Sharapova could potentially face World Number 8 and also former World Number 1 Jelena Jankovic later this week. Jankovic defeated Marion Bartoli 6-4 6-3, putting an end to her match-losing streat against the French 14th seed.

Querrey cuts arm in accident

Tuesday, September 29 - Californian tennis star Sam Querrey has withdrawn from the Thailand Open on Monday because of an accident with a glass table top in Bangkok. Reports are that Querrey sat on a glass table and fell through it, cutting his right forearm badly. Querrey was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery to reconstruct his arm.

Querrey, who is the world number 25 singles player and seeded third at the Bangkok Open, will be out of the game 4-6 weeks to heal from his injury. He will be replaced in the singles main draw by Donald Young.

Kim Clijsters will represent Belgium in Fed Cup

September 25, 2009 - Kim Clijsters announced today that she will represent her home country of Belgium in its Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group 11 first round tie against Poland in February, 2010.

This will be Clijsters first return to the Fed Cup after a two-year rest away from the game to give birth to her daughter Jada, now 18 months old. In August of 2009, Kim returned to tennis to compete in the Cincinnati Masters (now known as the Western & Southern Financial Masters) and Toronto's Rogers Cup. After her shocking victory against Serena Williams in the US Open Semifinals, Clijsters took the crown defeating World Number 5 Caroline Wozniacki. It was her second US Open win since 2005.

Clijsters will join her Belgian team at the beginning of next year for its tricky first round tie in Poland. Belgium's Fed Cup team also includes Yanina Wickmayer and Kirsten Flipkens. The Polish team, which has gained promotion to World Group 11 for the first time in history, is led by sisters Urszula and Agnieszka Radwanska.

Serena withdraws from Kremlin Cup

The current world number one, Serena Williams, withdrew from the Kremlin Cup Friday with complaints of leg pain. The pain was said to be caused by a strain in her left ankle during the U.S. Open. Serena wants to relax so she can go back to feeling 100 percent.

Serena quotes: “I have played a lot this year and my body needs to recover. My goal is to try and get the number one ranking back.” Williams will give up the number one spot to Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic when the new rankings are released Monday, October 6.

Last year, Williams reached the final in Moscow and lost to the Russian Elena Dementieva.

The women’s competition is the strongest in the 19-year history of the $2.3 million tournament, which starts in Moscow on Monday October 6, with eight of the world’s top 10 players taking part.
